Today felt like a true closing chapter of the season here at Flaming Acres. Just after lunch, the rumble of engines echoed across the farm as the combine and semi-trucks rolled into the corn field. There’s something about that sound—steady, purposeful, almost triumphant—that stirs an emotion deep in the bones of anyone who loves the land.
We watched as the combine made its way through the rows, gathering the tall golden stalks that have stood faithfully all summer long. Pass after pass, the field changed from abundance to stubble, neat and clean—another year’s story written in the soil. The corn will be transported and ground into feed for cattle, specifically dairy cows. It’s humbling to think about the cycle of provision: this land feeding the animals that then help feed families. Farming may look slow and quiet from the outside, but days like this remind us of just how much purpose is woven into it.
The yield was strong this year—better than we dared hope—and the proceeds will help cover the water and taxes that keep this farm moving forward. What a blessing. After a season of so many long hours and unknowns, seeing a good harvest roll into those trucks felt like taking a deep, grateful breath.
There is a particular satisfaction that settles in the heart on harvest day. It’s more than the relief of being done. It’s the knowledge that what the ground has held, it has now given back. It’s watching months of work become fruit. And then—just as important—allowing the soil to rest.
As the field emptied and the sunset brushed gold across the stubble, I felt that familiar spiritual stirring. Harvest always mirrors life. We labor, we plant, we water, but God is the one who brings the increase. And when the increase comes—whether in crops, in character, or in quiet moments of grace—there is a holy kind of celebration that rises up in us.
Today was that kind of day.
A day that whispers, “Look what faithfulness can grow. Look what perseverance can bring. Look what God can do.”
Tonight, the field rests. And in a small, grateful way… so do we.
With a heart full of harvest thanks,
Debra Flaming
