Honoring Kaylee Jade: A Dahlia of Remembrance and Hope
Tomorrow, December 26 at noon Pacific Time, a very special dahlia will be released into the world—one that carries far more meaning than its breathtaking beauty alone.
The Kaylee Jade Dahlia was lovingly created in memory of Kaylee Jade Goncalves, a beloved young woman whose life was tragically taken in 2022. Kaylee was a student at the University of Idaho, a daughter, a sister, a friend—and someone remembered by many for her warmth, joy, and vibrant spirit.

Sweat, Soil, and Sacred Friendships
Today was a day for the record books—our hardworking crew cut through 47 crates of dahlia tubers in one single day! That’s a new Flaming Acres record and such a satisfying milestone in our harvest journey. Now, I have 35 bins of tubers waiting to be sorted and processed over the next few days as we tally up our inventory—determining which tubers will be shared with others and which will be planted again for next year’s crop.

Setbacks and Silver Linings
This evening, I feel a peace that’s been missing in recent weeks. Maybe it’s because the digging finally went right—or maybe it’s something deeper. Around here, plans often shift and tools break, but giving up isn’t an option. Each setback teaches us something new, if we’re willing to see it that way.

Taking a Break — The Kind That Helps You Grow
We’ve had a few unexpected “breaks” around Flaming Acres this week. First, our potato digger decided to take one of its own—a tooth broke clean off a gear, and the whole piece had to be refabricated at the machine shop. With only five rows left to harvest, we found ourselves suddenly… on pause.

Meeting the Goal
Today was a full and productive day on the farm. We got started early with our teens washing, drying, and cutting dahlia tubers. After lunch, our faithful friends Steve and Cathy joined in, and together we pushed hard until 7:30 this evening with one goal in mind—to get everything that was harvested completely cut. I’m proud to announce that we met that goal!

Lessons in the Field
Yesterday slipped away without a blog post — and for good reason. We worked the dahlia harvest from nine in the morning until well past sundown. By the time I came inside, I was chilled to the bone and bone-tired from a full day of processing tubers.

Hands and Hearts Joining In
Monday Musings: What a difference a week makes! When we began harvesting dahlia tubers just days ago, the task ahead felt enormous—twelve long rows stretching out before us, each one full of clumps waiting to be unearthed, washed, divided, and stored. But now, as we start a brand new week, we can look back with gratitude and see just how far we’ve come.

Dahlia Harvest: Day One
The hum of the tractor broke the morning stillness as Dion made the final adjustments to the potato digger—a machine that’s about to earn its keep for the next several weeks. Our friends Steve and Cathy Hill joined us for the very first day of dahlia tuber harvest, and together, we dug into the season’s next chapter—literally.
One row down, eleven to go.

People of the Harvest (Volunteers, You’re Invited!)
The fields are beginning to quiet, but the real work—the kind that sets next year’s beauty in motion—is just beginning. This week, we’ll be carefully lifting the dahlias from their beds, washing and labeling each clump, and preparing the tubers for their long winter rest. It’s a task that takes many hands, much laughter, and a shared love for these flowers that have filled our fields with color all season long.

Dahlia Tuber Harvest: Help Us Divide & Conquer!

Here at Flaming Acres, we’re rolling up our sleeves for one of the most exciting times of the year—tuber harvest! This is when we carefully dig up those magical clumps hiding beneath the soil and prepare them for next spring’s blooms. But here’s the twist: we can’t (and don’t want to) do it alone. More Field Notes from Flaming Acres Dahlias September 27th
Today was one of those full and satisfying farm days—the kind where the list is long, the sun is warm, and the blooms keep surprising me. I’ve been out in the dahlia rows with my notebook, jotting down field notes, numbering plants, and making sure our photos and videos match what is actually growing. A few mystery blooms are keeping me guessing, but I love the detective work of tracking them down and cataloging them properly.

Each plant seems to have its own rhythm this time of year—some still bursting with new buds, others stretching tall and proud with full blossoms catching the light just right.
