Seeds of Community: A Morning at the Franz Witte Seed Swap

Seed Swap at Franz Witte Garden Center Saturday March 7th

This morning I’ll be spending a few joyful hours surrounded by fellow gardeners at the Seed Swap & Social Gathering at Franz Witte Garden Center in Nampa, trading dahlia tubers and celebrating the beginning of another growing season.

Events like this are a beautiful reminder that gardening has always been about more than plants. It’s about community, generosity, and the simple joy of sharing what grows well in our own soil with someone else who loves to grow things too.

Today from 10:00 AM to Noon, gardeners from across the Treasure Valley will gather to exchange seeds, stories, and inspiration for the season ahead. Whether someone brings heirloom vegetables, flower seeds, or a new plant discovery, every swap carries a little bit of a gardener’s hope for the coming year.

Sharing Dahlias from Flaming Acres

I’ll be bringing a selection of Flaming Acres Dahlias tubers to trade and share with those attending the event. One of the things I love most about dahlias is how easily they connect gardeners with one another.

A single tuber planted in spring can grow into a spectacular plant that produces dozens of blooms all summer long. And at the end of the season, that one tuber multiplies — creating more to divide and pass along.

In many ways, dahlias are a flower meant for sharing.

Every time a tuber changes hands, it carries the story of the garden it came from and the excitement of the garden it’s about to begin in.

Spring Is Waking Up

Early March in Idaho still carries the chill of winter, but gardeners know what this season truly represents — anticipation.

Seed packets begin appearing on kitchen tables. Garden plans start taking shape. Soil temperatures are slowly climbing. And the quiet work of preparing for spring begins.

Gatherings like today’s seed swap feel a little like the first whisper of the gardening season.

You start seeing familiar faces again. Conversations drift toward planting dates, favorite varieties, and what everyone is excited to grow this year.

And somehow, after a morning like this, spring suddenly feels much closer.

A Simple Joy

If you happen to be in the area this morning, stop by and say hello. I’ll happily trade a few dahlia tubers and talk flowers with anyone who shares a love for growing beautiful things.

After all, gardening has always been one of the simplest ways to build friendships — one seed, one tuber, and one conversation at a time.

And who knows…A dahlia planted this year may become the beginning of a garden tradition for years to come.
