The fields are beginning to quiet, but the real work—the kind that sets next year’s beauty in motion—is just beginning. This week, we’ll be carefully lifting the dahlias from their beds, washing and labeling each clump, and preparing the tubers for their long winter rest. It’s a task that takes many hands, much laughter, and a shared love for these flowers that have filled our fields with color all season long.

If you’ve ever wanted to peek behind the scenes and learn what makes a dahlia tuber thrive, this is your chance!During your time here, we’ll teach you how to identify the “eyes” that mark a viable tuber—the tiny promise of next year’s bloom. You’ll also learn how we divide, clean, and store each variety, ensuring that what’s planted next spring is healthy, labeled, and ready to flourish.
We provide everything you’ll need: tools, training, and encouragement (plus coffee, of course!). You just bring your boots, jeans, a sweatshirt, and a cheerful heart. As a thank-you, volunteers will earn one dahlia tuber for every hour worked—a little piece of Flaming Acres to plant in your own garden.
This is one of the most rewarding times on the farm—a week of work that blends learning, laughter, and legacy.Whether you come for one shift or several, you’ll leave with dirt on your boots, joy in your heart, and the quiet satisfaction of being part of something beautiful that’s growing far beyond the field, people of the harvest.
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” — Luke 10:2
So, friends—Sign up for a shift (morning or afternoon), bring your boots and a smile, and come be part of the harvest.
Sincerely,
Debra Flaming
