As we move deeper into September, dahlias are still giving us their best — but they also need a little extra attention this time of year. Cooler nights, shorter days, and the hint of fall in the air signal a shift in how we care for them. Here are a few ways to keep your dahlias happy and blooming strong as the season winds down:
1. Stay Consistent with Watering 💧
Even though the days are cooler, your dahlias still appreciate regular moisture. Just be mindful not to overwater, since cooler soil can hold onto moisture longer.
2. Keep Feeding 🌱
A balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks will give your dahlias the energy they need to keep producing those vibrant blooms right into October.
3. Deadhead Often ✂️
Removing spent flowers not only keeps your plants looking tidy, it encourages more blooms. Think of it as giving your dahlias a little “pep talk” to keep going.
4. Staking Check 🌾
Heavy fall blooms can bend or break stems if they aren’t supported. Take a few minutes to tie in wayward stems or adjust your stakes.
5. Harvest with Intention 🌸
Now’s the time to gather armloads of blooms for bouquets, friends, and neighbors. The more you cut, the more the plant will reward you.
Dahlias may be late-season stars, but they shine brightest when cared for with a little TLC. These small touches can stretch the beauty of your garden right up to the first frost.

✨ How are your dahlias doing this week?
