Day 2: Spring Planting Series | April 24, 2026

There’s something tender and hopeful about this stage of the journey…
You haven’t planted yet.Your hands may still be clean.Your garden beds are waiting.
And yet—this moment matters more than you might think.
Because before a single tuber touches the soil, you’re already setting the stage for success.
Starting something new can feel overwhelming… but this part? It’s gentler than it seems.
A few simple understandings will carry you forward with confidence.

What Will My Tubers Look Like?
If you’ve never seen a dahlia tuber before, you might be a little surprised.
They don’t look like seeds…They don’t look like bulbs…And they certainly don’t look like the picture-perfect ideas we sometimes carry in our minds.
Some are long and skinny—like little roots reaching. Some are short and chunky—solid and stout. Some feel smooth to the touch… others a bit rough or even wrinkled.
And here’s the beautiful truth:
All of that is completely normal.
Dahlias don’t begin in perfection. They begin in possibility.

Tuber Size: A Gentle Surprise
Here’s something that often catches first-time growers off guard…
Bigger does not mean better.
It’s easy to assume that the largest tuber will produce the biggest bloom—but dahlias have a way of rewriting expectations.
Some of the most breathtaking flowers…the ones that stop you in your tracks…often come from the most unassuming tubers.
Small. Modest. Quiet.
Just like people, dahlias carry their beauty beneath the surface.
What matters most is not size or appearance—but health and the ability to grow.

Tuber Identification: Growing with Confidence
At Flaming Acres Dahlias, we know that confidence begins with clarity.
That’s why we take extra care in how each tuber is prepared and labeled.
Each tuber is stamped with the variety name
You may also see a number—this is part of our farm’s tracking system
Some tubers may already be waking up—offering a tiny green sprout as a promise of what’s to come.
Others may still be resting quietly, holding what’s called a dormant eye—not visible at first glance, but very much alive.
Both are perfectly fine.
Because in the garden…just like in life…
Not everything wakes up at the same time.
A Quiet Confidence
If you take nothing else from today, hold onto this:
You don’t need perfect tubers. You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You simply need a healthy start…and a willingness to grow alongside your garden.
Because even now—before planting—something is already beginning.
Up Next: Day 3 — Preparing Your Soil & Choosing the Perfect Spot.
We’ll step into the garden together and begin getting your space ready for those beautiful blooms to come.
Sincerely,
Debra Flaming
