How to Disbud Dahlias: A Step-by-Step Guide to Bigger, Better Blooms

Dahlia Bud

Disbudding is a simple practice that helps your dahlias put more energy into fewer blooms—resulting in larger, more show-stopping flowers. Whether you're growing for exhibition or simply want your garden to shine, disbudding is a great tool to have in your gardener’s toolbox.

What is Disbudding?

Disbudding means removing the smaller flower buds that form alongside the central bud on a stem. This directs the plant’s energy into one strong, central bloom, rather than dividing resources between three.

Why Disbud?

  • To grow larger, fuller flowers

  • To improve stem strength and bloom form

  • To help plants focus energy on quality over quantity

  • To prepare blooms for cutting, showing, or photography

What You'll Need

  • Your hands (yes, fingers work very well)

  • A few minutes per plant during peak budding

  • Optional: Clean, sharp scissors or snips (sterilized between plants)

Step-by-Step: How to Disbud Dahlias

  1. Find the Bud Cluster
Locate a developing bloom on the plant. You’ll often see three buds at the top of a main stem—one large, central bud with two smaller side buds (called "laterals").

  2. Identify the Strongest Bud
The center bud is usually the most mature and well-positioned. This is the one you’ll keep.

  3. Remove the Side Buds
Gently pinch off or snip the two smaller side buds at their base. Be careful not to damage the stem or the remaining central bud.

  4. Repeat Weekly as Needed
Disbudding is a process, not a one-time task. Check your plants regularly during the bloom period for new bud clusters to manage.

  5. Sterilize Tools Between Plants
To avoid spreading disease, always clean your tools with rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution between plants.

Pro Tip:

Want more stems instead of bigger blooms? Then skip disbudding and let the plant produce freely. Disbudding is a choice, not a rule—it depends on your goals!
