Rooted in Care:
How We Grow Dahlias for You

Every bloom tells a story.

At Flaming Acres Dahlias, that story began long before a flower opened in the field—or a tuber was ever tucked into the soil. It began with care. With purpose. With a quiet commitment to steward beauty for your garden, your home, and your soul.

Here’s a glimpse into how we grew our dahlias—rooted in care, and always with you in mind.

Preparing the Soil with Purpose

Long before our first dahlia bloomed, the work began in the earth itself. Healthy soil was the foundation of everything we did. Each spring, Dion carefully cultivated the rows to loosen the soil and improve drainage, while I documented the growth and kept careful notes on each variety.

We enriched the soil with nutrients, ensuring that the field provided a nourishing environment for our tubers. We hand-hoed between plants weekly—especially in early growth stages—removing weeds the tractor couldn’t reach. It was slow, quiet work, often done in the cool morning hours when the only sound was birdsong and the whisper of the breeze.

This wasn’t just soil. It was sacred ground—a place where beauty was born.

Planting with Intention

Each tuber we planted was hand-placed with intention. We checked for viable eyes, oriented each tuber just right, and spaced every plant with careful planning to allow airflow and room to grow.

We mapped out the fields so that whether someone was creating bouquets, shopping for tubers, or strolling the garden, they would find rhythm and harmony in every row. Labels were stamped and double-checked because when fall arrived, accuracy mattered.

This was where the artistry of flower farming met the precision of stewardship.

Tending with Love and Vigilance

Throughout the season, our dahlias were never left to chance. We watered deeply and consistently, using overhead sprinklers to reach every plant. We topped early in the season and deadheaded regularly to encourage strong stems and abundant blooms. We walked the rows often—watching, noticing, responding.

When pests appeared, we intervened gently. When storms threatened, we anchored with faith. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was soul-deep satisfying.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” —Colossians 3:23

Every task—whether done with a hoe, a hose, or a prayer—was part of the care we poured into each plant.

Harvesting for the Future

Come fall, our focus shifted underground. After the blooms faded, we allowed the plants to die back naturally, signaling that the tubers were ready to be lifted.

We dug with a repurposed potato digger to cover the scale of our fields, inspected each clump as it surfaced, then cleaned, divided, and stored the tubers with great care. We placed them in a secure, temperature- and humidity-controlled environment to preserve dormancy until spring. Every single tuber was inspected multiple times before it ever reached your hands.

This harvest also brought real-world lessons. Some varieties produced beautifully; others yielded far fewer tubers than expected. Weather shifts, plant health, and variety-specific quirks all played a role. There were moments of disappointment, to be sure—but also clarity. These challenges have helped us pinpoint where to refine our growing practices, improve spacing, adjust soil nutrition, and strengthen our approach for next year.

Because when you order from us, you’re not just buying a tuber—you’re trusting us with your garden.

We’re committed to growing forward with intention, applying everything we learned this season so that next year’s harvest can be healthier, fuller, and more resilient.

Because when you order from us, you weren’t just buying a tuber. You were planting a promise.

Mission Statement – Flaming Acres Dahlias

At Flaming Acres, we grow more than flowers—we grow beauty rooted in faith, nurtured by purpose, and shared with joy.

What began with a shovel, a prayer, and a patch of Idaho soil has grown into a calling: to cultivate a place where beauty points back to the Creator, where each bloom whispers of His glory, and where hope takes root in the hearts of those who visit, whether in person or online.

We believe that beauty is not a luxury—it’s a gift. One worth tending, sharing, and passing on to future generations. Through every dahlia planted, we offer a quiet invitation to rest, to rejoice, and to rediscover wonder in God’s creation.

Because in a world that feels fractured, growing beauty is a quiet act of faith.

Hope is always worth growing.
