Rooted in Care: How We Grow Dahlias for You

Dahlia Planting in the Field
Dahlia Hoeing in the Field

Every bloom tells a story. At Flaming Acres Dahlias, that story begins long before a flower opens in the field—or a tuber is ever tucked into the soil. It begins with care. With purpose. With a quiet commitment to steward beauty for your garden, your home, and your soul.

Here’s a glimpse into how we grow our dahlias—rooted in care, and grown with you in mind.

Preparing the Soil with Purpose

Long before our first dahlia blooms, the work begins in the earth itself. Healthy soil is the foundation of everything we do. Each spring, Dion carefully cultivates our rows to loosen the soil and improve drainage, while I document the growth and keep careful notes on each variety.

We enrich the soil with  nutrients, ensuring that the field provides a nourishing environment for our tubers. We hand-hoe between plants weekly, especially in early growth stages, removing weeds the tractor can't reach. It’s slow, quiet work—done in the cool hours of the morning when the only sound is birdsong and the whisper of the breeze.

This isn’t just soil. It’s sacred ground—a place where beauty is born.

Planting with Intention

Each tuber we plant is hand-placed with intention. We check for viable eyes, orient the tubers just right, and space each plant with careful planning to ensure airflow and room to grow.

We’ve mapped out the fields—so whether you’re creating bouquets, shopping for tubers, or strolling the garden, there’s a rhythm and harmony to what you’ll find. Labels are stamped and double-checked because when it’s time to divide in the fall, accuracy matters.

This is where the artistry of flower farming meets the precision of stewardship.

Tending with Love and Vigilance

Throughout the season, our dahlias are never left to chance. We water deeply and consistently, using overhead sprinklers to reach every plant. We top early in the growing season and deadhead regularly to promote strong stems and more abundant blooms. We walk the rows often—watching, noticing, responding.

When pests show up, we intervene gently. When storms threaten, we anchor with faith. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s soul-deep satisfying.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…” —Colossians 3:23

Each task, whether done with a hoe, a hose, or a prayer, is part of the care we pour into every plant.

Harvesting for the Future

Come fall, our focus shifts underground. After the blooms have faded, we let the plants die back naturally, signaling that the tubers are ready to be lifted.

We dig with a  repurposed potato digger since our fields are so vast and we inspect the integrity of each clump of tubers as they are unearthed,  then clean, divide, and store them with care. We store our tubers in a secure, temperature- and humidity-controlled environment to preserve dormancy until spring. Every single tuber is inspected multiple times before it reaches your hands.

Because when you order from us, you’re not just buying a tuber. You’re planting a promise.

Grown With You in Mind

We don’t take shortcuts—because we know these flowers will grace your gardens, your bouquets, your celebrations. Whether you’re a seasoned grower or planting your very first dahlia, we want you to feel confident, encouraged, and inspired.

You’re part of this story too.

So, from our family farm to your backyard, thank you for letting us grow something beautiful for you.

Mission Statement – Flaming Acres Dahlias

At Flaming Acres, we grow more than flowers—we grow beauty rooted in faith, nurtured by purpose, and shared with joy.

What began with a shovel, a prayer, and a patch of Idaho soil has grown into a calling: to cultivate a place where beauty points back to the Creator, where each bloom whispers of His glory, and where hope takes root in the hearts of those who visit, whether in person or online.

We believe that beauty is not a luxury—it’s a gift. One worth tending, sharing, and passing on to future generations. Through every dahlia planted, we offer a quiet invitation to rest, to rejoice, and to rediscover wonder in God’s creation.

Because in a world that feels fractured, growing beauty is a quiet act of faith.

Hope is always worth growing.
