A Day After Thanksgiving...and My Heart Is Still Full

The day after Thanksgiving has long been known as a busy one—sales, travel, leftovers stacked in the fridge. But today felt wonderfully simple, beautifully grounded, and full of the sweetest kind of noise: the sounds of my granddaughters filling our home.

This morning, my three little girls came over for brunch with their parents, and from the moment they walked through the door, our house came alive. Toys, blankets, pillows, and snacks seemed to migrate into every corner—exactly what you’d expect when joy comes toddling, crawling, giggling, and bouncing in behind them.

Before the whirlwind of brunch began, I even got to start my day with the happiest kind of FaceTime call—my grandson Westyn beaming at me from the screen. What a gift technology can be. Some days I wonder how grandmas ever survived without it.

Later, as the house quieted and I gathered up the last of the little socks, sticky cups, and puzzle pieces, I found myself overwhelmed with something stronger than tired feet… gratitude.

Because today was rich.

Sleeping Baby Riley

I held baby Riley as she slept like only a baby can—heavy, warm, completely trusting. I rocked little Aubrey to sleep and listened to her soft breathing as she drifted off. And I read stories to Liv, whose imagination sparkles just as brightly as her eyes.

What a full Nana life. What an honor to be part of theirs.

This afternoon, Ashley and I slipped away for a long 2½-mile walk—just the two of us. We talked about the good and the hard, the joys and stretching moments of motherhood. She is doing an incredible job, even when she doubts it. Watching her mother her own babies is one of the most beautiful gifts I’ve ever been given.

And speaking of good parenting—my daughter who shares her heart with me in the form of a grand-dog named Koda continues to impress me too. She loves that sweet dog with a tenderness that speaks volumes about her heart. Koda doesn’t have a clue, but he’s living the comfiest, coziest, most-loved dog life imaginable.

When the quiet finally settles around me, the Lord brings a few truths gently back to mind:

Family is His sweetest blessing.

Love multiplies because He first loved us.

And gratitude is more than a holiday—

it’s a daily invitation to notice His goodness.

May your own post-Thanksgiving moments be filled with the quiet beauty of reflection, the joy of small things, and the steady hope that comes from walking each day with Him.

With a heart still full,

Debra Flaming
