April 26, 2026 Spring Planting Series — Day 3

There’s something hopeful about choosing where your dahlias will grow…like picking the stage where their beauty will unfold.
And the good news? You don’t need the perfect garden to grow something beautiful.
You just need a good spot.

Follow the Light
Dahlias are sun-lovers at heart. They stretch, reach, and bloom best when they’re soaking in the light.
For the happiest plants, aim for:
6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day
Morning and early afternoon sun (this is the sweetest kind)
If your space gets a little less light, don’t worry—you still have options.Smaller or dwarf varieties tend to be a bit more forgiving and can still reward you with lovely blooms.
Give Them a Little Space
Dahlias like room to breathe.
When choosing your spot, try to plant away from:
Trees (they quietly compete for water and nutrients)
Large shrubs (they cast shade and limit airflow)
Buildings or fences that block sunlight
A little breathing room allows air to move freely—and that simple detail can make a big difference in keeping your plants healthy and strong.
A Note About Hot Summers
If you’re gardening here in Idaho, you know the sun can get a little bold in the heat of summer.
Your dahlias might appreciate a gentle pause from that intensity:
Morning sun + light afternoon shade can be just right
Some blooms—especially soft pastels and bi-colors—may show a touch of crisping on the edges during extreme heat
A little protection doesn’t limit their beauty…it actually helps preserve it.

Watering Made Simple
Watering doesn’t have to be complicated—it just needs to be consistent.
Once your dahlias are actively growing, they’ll prefer:
Deep watering (not just a surface sprinkle)
About 3 times per week
Around 45–60 minutes each time
This encourages roots to grow deep and strong, creating plants that are more resilient as the season unfolds.
💡 A gentle reminder for beginners:Before you see sprouts, less water is better.Too much moisture early on can lead to rot—so patience here truly pays off.

Your Easy Location Checklist
If your planting spot checks most of these boxes, you’re in wonderful shape:
☀️ 6–8 hours of sunlight
🌿 Good airflow
🌱 Well-draining soil
🌬️ Some protection from strong wind
🌸 Enough space to grow without crowding
A Confident Step Forward
Choosing where to plant your dahlias might feel like a big decision…but it doesn’t have to be a perfect one.
It’s simply your way of giving them a good beginning.
Because when you place them where they can thrive…you’re not just planting flowers—
you’re creating the conditionsfor something truly beautiful to grow.
Looking Ahead: Soil Preparation Matters More Than You Think
Now that you’ve chosen a spot where your dahlias can truly shine, there’s one more piece of the foundation to consider… the soil beneath your feet.
It may not be the most glamorous part of gardening, but it is one of the most important. Healthy soil is where strong roots begin, where nutrients are gathered, and where your dahlias quietly prepare for the beauty they’ll bring above the surface.
In our next post, we’ll walk through simple, practical ways to prepare your soil—so when planting day arrives, you’ll feel confident knowing you’ve created the very best start possible.
Because when the soil is right…everything else has a way of falling into place.
Sincerely,
Debra Flaming
