Monday Musings: What a difference a week makes! When we began harvesting dahlia tubers just days ago, the task ahead felt enormous—twelve long rows stretching out before us, each one full of clumps waiting to be unearthed, washed, divided, and stored. But now, as we start a brand new week, we can look back with gratitude and see just how far we’ve come.
We have four and a half rows harvested and are fully set up for washing and dividing. Even better, we’ve hit our stride—our speed and teamwork have increased exponentially! There’s something deeply satisfying about watching a rhythm form between friends working side by side, the laughter mixing with the hum of effort and purpose.
This morning, our faithful friends Steve and Cathy were joined by another dear friend, Debbie, and together they made quick work of the morning tasks. After lunch, two wonderful teenagers joined the effort—strong, eager, and quick learners. They’ve worked with us before during our Fall Harvest Festival Days and have always impressed us with their cheerful spirits and willingness to jump in wherever needed. Today was no different.
As the blooms continue to hang on in the fields—bright against the crisp air—I’m still hoping to capture a few more photos before the frost finally calls the season to rest. But for now, my heart is full. The day was a reminder that hard work becomes joy when shared, and that progress—like beauty—often grows quietly, one row at a time.
Tomorrow promises a full crew and another full day of harvest. With so many hands and hearts joining in, I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together.
With gratitude and muddy boots,
Debra Flaming
