Worth Every Mile

Today, Dion and I are traveling five hours to watch our grandson Jett’s football game. We’ll also get to see his little brother, our pint-sized cowboy, Westy. I savor every minute with my grandsons — visits are rare since they live farther away, but distance makes the moments even sweeter.

Jett is thirteen now, and the memories we’ve made over the years are treasures I hold close. When he was little, he loved to study every ornament on the Christmas tree, holding them carefully and gazing at the twinkling lights in wonder. One summer we had an above-ground pool, and Jett and I would dive beneath the surface, racing to collect rocks from the bottom. Another time, during a busy farm field trip, the Jumbo Jumper was soaked with morning dew. With schools on their way, we grabbed every towel in the house and went slipping and sliding across that giant pillow until it was dry — and we were drenched and laughing.
Jett has both brains and brawn. He’s quick to challenge me to a chess match (and yes, he’s clever with his distractions). I’m proud to say I won our last game, though he trounced me in The Game of Life — becoming a millionaire while I lagged far behind!
Westyn, at just two years old, is still unfolding his personality, but I already see his big heart and cowboy spirit. He loves roping, horses, and bubble baths — as long as the bubbles don’t interfere with his rope tricks. He adores his Daddy and Mommy and looks up to Jett with shining eyes. He’s got a playful toughness too, always ready for a little wrestling match.
Though I’m not much of a traveler, it will be worth every mile to see my boys. I love them deeply and pray for them daily — that they will come to know God, discover their purpose, and live with compassion and conviction.
Life passes so quickly. It seems only yesterday I was the mom raising four children, and now I’m the grandma watching my children raise theirs. What a beautiful, humbling gift it is to live long enough to see love multiply across generations.
As I think about this journey and the memories wrapped up in these little lives, I’m reminded of Proverbs 17:6 — “Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.”
What a beautiful truth. Grandchildren are indeed one of God’s sweetest blessings, a living reminder of His faithfulness from generation to generation. Whether your grandkids live next door or hours away, take the time to savor the moments — read the stories, cheer from the sidelines, share your faith, and plant seeds of love that will grow long after you’re gone. These relationships are eternal investments, woven into the legacy of faith and family we leave behind.
Appreciating Everyday,
