Tomorrow, Saturday, September 13th, the Southwest Idaho Dahlia Society will host its annual Southwest Idaho Dahlia Show at JUMP in downtown Boise from 10 am–5 pm. This is one of my favorite events of the year—a time when growers, arrangers, and photographers gather to celebrate the dazzling diversity of this flower we all love.
My Entries in the Show
This year, I’ll be entering several photographs of dahlias across different classes. One special highlight is my entry for the Vintage Dahlia Class: a beautiful photograph of Lutt Wichen, a variety hybridized in Arbor Ann, Michigan in 1940. It feels like a piece of history preserved in bloom.
I’ll also be submitting photos in the single and double bloom classes, capturing the full spectrum of form and color that makes dahlias so irresistible. For a fun twist, I even entered two photographs in the “animal with dahlia” category—featuring our faithful dog, Cooper. He was not the easiest model (patience is not his strong suit!), but I did manage to catch a few charming moments of him posing with the flowers.

Ashley’s Bouquet Creations
I’m also thrilled that my daughter Ashley will be part of the show. She’s coming over today to cut fresh stems from our companion garden and dahlia field, and she plans to create bouquets for the Seasonal Bouquet category. In addition, she’s putting together cheerful market bouquets in Mason jars that will be available for purchase. These not only spread beauty into the hands of visitors but also help raise funds to support the Southwest Idaho Dahlia Society.
Why This Show Matters
A dahlia show is so much more than ribbons or competition—it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and the remarkable artistry of God’s creation. Each bloom is a reminder of the endless variety and beauty He has woven into the natural world. To see them gathered all in one place is breathtaking.
If you’re local to Boise, I warmly invite you to stop by JUMP tomorrow. Walk through the exhibits, vote for your favorites, and maybe take home a bouquet. You’ll leave inspired, with your heart lifted by the joy of flowers.
With grateful hands and a heart full of blooms,
Debra Flaming
