More Field Notes from Flaming Acres Dahlias September 27th

Today was one of those full and satisfying farm days—the kind where the list is long, the sun is warm, and the blooms keep surprising me. I’ve been out in the dahlia rows with my notebook, jotting down field notes, numbering plants, and making sure our photos and videos match what is actually growing. A few mystery blooms are keeping me guessing, but I love the detective work of tracking them down and cataloging them properly.

Updating the inventory is no small task—every bloom has a place, a number, and a story. Between counting plants, photographing them in their best light, and capturing video clips for future catalog updates, it feels like the flowers are training me in patience and precision.

Alongside the paperwork and photography, I’ve been harvesting blooms to dry for future craft projects. Thanks to Brynda Fauth’s method with silica sand, I’m learning how to preserve these flowers so their beauty lasts long after the season fades. It’s a joy to imagine them becoming part of handmade gifts or displays in the months ahead.

Stunning Bouquets By Ashley

And then, of course, there’s Ashley. My bouquet-maker extraordinaire continues to gather armfuls of dahlias and companion flowers, weaving them into arrangements that seem to sing with color. She gives them freely—to family, friends, and anyone in need of encouragement. Beauty is meant to be shared, and Ashley’s bouquets are living reminders of that truth.

True Treasurers

Between caring for grandchildren, helping friends in need, and tending the flowers, it’s a challenge to carve out time to sit and reflect. But writing these notes helps me pause and capture a glimpse of the beauty tucked into these busy days.

Wrap-Up

As the days grow shorter and the work in the fields keeps me on my toes, I’m reminded that this season isn’t just about tending dahlias—it’s about tending people, too. Whether it’s a catalog entry, a bouquet, or a moment shared with family and friends, each small act is part of something much bigger: cultivating beauty, joy, and encouragement in every corner of life.

Sincerely,

Debra Flaming
